Ratan Tata, the famous industrialist of the country, was born on 28 December 1937 in the city of Surat. Ratan Tata is the son of Naval Tata. Who was adopted by Navajbai Tata. When Ratan Tata was 10 years old and his younger brother Jimmy Tata was 7 years old, their parents separated from each other in 1940.

Ratan Tata did his early education from Campion School in Mumbai. Where he received education till 8th standard. After that he went to Cathedral and John Connon School. After finishing his schooling he completed his BS in Architecture with Structural Engineering from Cornell University in 1962. Ratan Tata worked briefly at Jones & Emmons in Los Angeles, California before returning to India. After coming to India, he worked with IBM but JRD Tata did not like it and he gave Ratan Tata an opportunity to work with Tata Group. Since then the real foundation of his career was laid.

In 1961 he started working with Tata. For the first few initial days, he worked on the shop floor of Tata Steel. After that he gradually joined with other companies of Tata Group. There came a time when he was elected as the Director-in-Charge in the National Radio and Electronics Company (Nelco) in 1971.

In 1981, he was appointed the chairman of Tata. At that time the company was making huge losses and the share of the company in the market was only 2% and the decrease was 40%. After a few years, Ratan Tata brought huge profits to the company. Shortly thereafter, he was made the successor of the Tata Group in 1991.

After Ratan Tata took over this post, it was as if the fortunes of the Tata Group had changed. It seemed that only Tata's name was written on the sky. During his tenure, Tata Consultancy Services issued a public issue. After which Tata Motors was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

In the year 1998, Tata produced its first Indian car, which was named Tata Indica. This was followed by Tetley by Tata, Jaguar Land Rover by Tata Motors and Chorus by Tata Steel.
