Career of Sunil Bharti Mittal
Sunil Bharti Mittal started his business at the age of about 18. He started a small cycle business with his friends with only 20 thousand rupees and first started making bicycle parts for Brijmohan Munjal's Hero Cycle Company. After this, he felt that this business could not be very big and together with his brothers established 'Bharti Overseas Trading Company'.
He sold his cycle and other businesses and moved to Mumbai. In the year 1981, he bought an 'import license' from exporters from Punjab and then started selling portable generators imported from Japan. This business gave him a lot of experience in marketing and sales of goods. Gradually this business also got frozen and everything started going well, but a policy change of the government stopped their business overnight. It was the period of license-raj and the government banned the import of generators, as two Indian companies were given licenses to manufacture generators in the country.
Sunil took a lesson from this incident that whenever such an opportunity comes ahead, he will be ready to seize it and this opportunity came in the year 1992 when the government was distributing licenses for mobile phone service for the first time. Sunil grabbed that opportunity and has history ahead of him.
Prior to 1992, Sunil had set up Bharti Telecom Limited (BTL) in the year 1986 and entered into an agreement with Germany's AG Siemens for manufacturing push button phones. Gradually he expanded his business and by the 1990s, Sunil's company was manufacturing fax machines, cordless phones and other telecommunications equipment.
In 1992, the Government of India began licensing mobile phone services for the first time; Sunil Mittal, in collaboration with French telecommunications group Vivendi, obtained the cellular license for the Delhi region as well as some other regions.
In 1995 Sunil Mittal established Bharti Cellular Limited (BCL) to offer cellular services and started operations under the Airtel brand. Soon, Airtel became the first telecom company to cross the 2 lakh mobile subscriber mark. After this, Bharti Cellular Limited started India's first private national and international long distance / STD / ISD telephone service named "IndiaOne".
In the year 2008-2009, Bharti Telecom tried to acquire "MTN", a telecom conglomerate based in South Africa, but despite several rounds of talks, no agreement could be reached between the two companies. Some sources believe that the South African government probably did not want this, which is why this agreement could not be reached.
In June 2010, Mittal-led Bharti Telecom acquired the South African telecom company “Jain Telecom. One was the largest ever acquisition by an Indian telecommunications company.
In 2012, Bharti signed an agreement with American company Wal-Mart to open retail stores across India, but this did not last long and the deal expired in October 2013.
Bharti also announced to buy "Loop Mobile" in the year 2014 for about 700 crores but later canceled the deal. In May 2015, the merger of Bharti retail chain 'EasyDay' and Future Bazaar's 'Big Bazaar' was announced.
